Tyrone is fortunate to offer 6 career oriented programs for senior high students in a comprehensive setting. It is the intent and purpose of these courses to familiarize and prepare students for careers in the 6 career clusters while offering rigorous academic challenges. Upon graduation, students who specialize in these programs can find work or continue their education in a post secondary setting. Accounting Technology/Technical & Bookkeeping

Accounting I, II and III courses take students on a journey through the world of principles and procedures of Accounting and business. In additional to Accounting concepts, these courses also provide insight on personal finance such as managing credit/debit cards, checkbooks and budgets. Students also gain an introduction to real-world Accounting software! Accounting II builds on the concepts gained in Accounting I by introducing partnerships and corporate accounting. Students complete advanced transactions, comprehensive activities, and a business simulation. Accounting III students focus on corporate and management accounting and will complete a variety business transactions/simulations using Accounting software.

Agricultural Production Operations, General

Agriculture is Pennsylvania’s #1 employer with about 1 in every 5 jobs being agriculturally-related. There are 300 different agricultural career opportunities, which include veterinarian, forester, landscaper, ag. mechanic, floral designer, ag. teachers, salesperson, and ag. engineer, just to name a few.

Agriculture is the study of the food, fiber, and natural resources industries, and the Ag Science Department has a variety of classes to meet everyone’s interests from plants and animals to mechanics and the environment. Students will learn skills for entry-level positions and to further their education after high school.

Carpentry/Carpenter

This course is intended for students who are interested in securing employment as a carpenter in the construction field or for students who are interested in continuing their education in the many construction and design programs at the post-secondary, associate degree level. This course gives students the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to construct, maintain, service, and repair all types of building construction. A continued higher math and computer skills throughout the course of study is greatly encouraged.
Instruction will be given in the following areas of building construction:

shop mathematics, layout and safety
footer, forms and foundation
sill, girder, and floor framing
wall, ceiling and roof framing
exterior and interior finish
sound and heating insulation materials
cabinet making
estimation of materials and cost
computer assisted home design and blueprint reading
machine operation and tool conditioning
bench work
safety

Cooperative Education

This cooperative diversified occupations program is designed to provide on-the-job training by a participating employer in occupational area compatible with the student's career goal. Students must complete an in-school theory course as well as the on-the-job training. The coop program can only be scheduled with the approval of the coop coordinator and the guidance counselor. Students who are interested in being considered for coop should complete an application prior to May of their academic year. Students completing applications in May will be considered first.
Cooperative diversified occupations/capstone provide a heterogeneous grouping of students from more than one vocational education objective or those students having a vocation career objective who are not presently in a career and technology program.

The Cooperative program is designed to:

Provide training in those vocational areas not presently being offered at the vocational-technical school or comprehensive high school.
Provide training for students who need an alternative form of education which meets their individual needs.
Provide a workstation as an extension of an existing program in which a student is enrolled.
Provide an opportunity for the student to choose and pursue a vocation of interest.

Vocational experiences include but are not limited to: fine dining establishments, fast food restaurants, business offices, retail stores, tattoo parlors, salvage businesses, farms, and hotel maintenance.

Cooperative Education students will learn a vocation and gain practical on-the-job training while enrolled in high school. The program is a cooperative undertaking between local employers and the school in an effort to provide students with the opportunity to learn the occupation of their choice. The course is designed for 12th grade students, but 11th grade students will also be considered with proper credit completion.

Nurse/Nursing Assistant/Aide and Patient Care Assistant

Health Occupations or “Health Tech,” as the students call it, is a preparatory class for any 10-12 grade student considering a career in medicine. We learn about infection control, medical terminology, medical abbreviations, legal concerns, and how to perform vital signs in the first year. The second level focuses on specific career skills in nursing assisting, physical therapy, and medical assisting in addition to First Aid and Job Seeking Skills. These students have the opportunity to practice the learned skills at Epworth Manor and Tyrone Hospital. Students have the chance to get certified in Health Care Provider CPR. The third year students go to clinical everyday for the first three periods of the day to see how functioning health care facility works and have the ability to interact with health care professionals. All students will also be part of the TASD Wellness Program.

Production Industries Technology

This course is designed to introduce the student to the metal and manufacturing industry. Areas of metal fabrication will be covered.

These areas include:

Safety
Basic metal identification
Measurement and layout tools and techniques
Basic hand tool and bench work
Sheet metal processes
Forge and foundry work
Introduction to welding
Machine tool technology (machine shop practices)
Hands-on activities related to above units of instruction

Students will be taught the necessary theory for each unit and will be required to pass necessary written and hands on tests related to the units. Students will perform hands-on activities and operations to gain experience in these areas. Good math skills are important for layout work and calculations necessary in the trade. Coursework includes classroom instruction (theory) 30% and hands-on operations 70%. By taking this class the student has indicated an interest in the metalworking field. According to industry statistics, there is a shortage of people to fill many good paying jobs. Possible careers include machinist, welder, sheet metal technician, cnc machine operator, and mechanical engineer.
